The fight against sludge-spreading in Virginia has been going on for decades. Some groups and individuals have lost battles and retreated. But the groups below continue to persevere in educating and empowering local citizens and decision-makers alike. Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance (ABRA)
ABRA is home to the Conservation Hub: a collection of custom GIS maps that provide details and context for land development projects and management practices that involve risk of environmental harm, as well as for environmental preservation and restoration initiatives. Includes a map of biosolids application areas.

Rockbridge Conservation (RACC)
RACC is a nonprofit with the mission to promote and enhance the protection, sustainable use, and stewardship of our community’s natural and cultural resources. RACC is volunteer-based, with committees that work on several topics, including a Watershed Committee and a PFAS Committee.

Wild Virginia
Wild Virginia uses a variety of approaches to advocate for the preservation and improvement of valuable ecological systems over extractive practices and for the right of people to use these resources for recreation and enjoyment. Their focus issues related to sludge include protecting Virginia’s water quality and preventing PFAS pollution.

Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN)
PRKN’s mission is to protect the right to clean water for all communities and all those who live in and rely upon the Potomac and Shenandoah watersheds by stopping pollution, making drinking water safe, protecting healthy river habitats, and enhancing use and enjoyment for all. Virginia Conservation Network (VCN)
VCN brings together 170 nonprofits from around the state, combining forces to make progress on conservation issues. They organize an annual Conservation Day when citizens and environmental group representatives talk with their legislators about issues important to them. VCN has taken a strong position against sludge.

Totier Creek Watershed Association
The mission of TCWA is to safeguard and enhance the natural resources and quality of life within the Totier Creek watershed, a vital public drinking water supply for Scottsville, Virginia, and a tributary to the James River and Chesapeake Bay. TCWA is committed to preserving and restoring surface waters, wetlands, and groundwater resources; plant, animal, and aquatic life; and scenic, historic, and cultural resources within the watershed.

Piedmont Environmental Council
With offices in Warrenton and Charlottesville, PEC’s work covers nine counties in Virginia’s northern piedmont. Their mission is: Protecting and restoring the lands and waters of the Virginia Piedmont, while building stronger, more sustainable communities.

Sierra Club Piedmont Group
The Piedmont Group endeavors to fulfill the Sierra Club's mission “to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth…"
The group serves Charlottesville City and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, and Rappahannock in central Virginia.
